Graduate level course that will explore multiple aspects of colonialism through film. In particular, we will explore how those in the margins are represented in film—by filmmakers of color. The course will be divided into the following themes: pre-colonization (West Africa), colonization (Antilles, West Africa), the struggle for independence (Maghreb, Central and South Africa), post-colonization/Diaspora (France, United States). Films will be accompanied by the reading of complementary critical articles. The films will be screened in class, with discussion to follow. Class discussion will be in French. Please be advised that some films will contain explicit representations of violence and disturbing material in general.
