How did the language spread and why is it used by a growing number of speakers in Africa? Addressing these and other questions, this course examines the social history and unique characteristics of varieties of French in the francophone world. Using texts, films, memoirs, and lectures, we will gain insight into the modern history of French overseas expansion in North America, Africa, and the Pacific and learn about the challenges faced by francophone communities trying to preserve and promote their language.
