Section Title:
Abolition
Section Info:
Topic: Abolition Description: Focused on the theories and practices of abolition, this interdisciplinary graduate seminar examines the radical, yet realizable, possibilities of abolition in its many forms. We will consider the dense web of relationships that extend far beyond the prison as a material structure, tracing the many different sites and effects of the prison industrial complex as well as the multiple efforts to dismantle it. At the same time, we will follow what Frederick Douglass and Angela Davis call "abolition democracy," which positions abolition as a process of creation rather than simply of dismantlement. Accordingly, the course looks closely at practices that redirect resources away from systems of oppression and toward imagining and building new conditions where all can survive and thrive. Will be taught in the GWS House, 1205 W. Nevada. Room 102.

Tech for Education Development
Section Info:
The importance of the relationship between education, technology, and social-economic development is increasing in the US and around the world. What are new information and communications technologies (ICTs), how are they being deployed, and for what reasons? This course will review basic definitions, explore current and new efforts to utilize ICTs in educational contexts, and compare how context and culture affect learning and teaching outcomes that utilize technology. A particular focus in this course will be on how ICTs are deployed in high-poverty contexts where diversity can make ICT4D particularly challenging. Materials will be primarily based on a set of readings taken from the recent international development literature.

Section Title:
Latinxs & Education
Section Info:
This seminar surveys the educational experiences of Latinx students, families, and communities in the United States as historically and presently impacted by the social construct of race. It assumes the theoretical stance of intersectionality as a lens that illuminates the ways Latinx education occurs at the nexus of race, gender, sexuality, class, and citizenship status. Specific examples of how Latinx communities throughout the Midwest have experienced, mitigated, and resisted institutional racism in education will allow us to gain a more concrete understanding of the interplay between larger schooling structures and Latinx lives. A special emphasis will be placed on critical race theory and Latina/o critical theory as frameworks that illuminate race in education while centering the experiences of Students of Color. The material thus challenges us to disentangle the effects of race, gender, class, sexuality, and immigration status on Latinx educational attainment and achievement.

Sociology of Sports
Section Info:
This course is intended to cover various important discussion points surrounding the Sociology of Sport. A traditional perspective on Sport is that it is a field where people from different racial groups, social class, and culture join together to participate in a meritocratic setting. However, this class critiques the social, political, historical and economic impact of Sport in U.S. society.
