SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 4 hours.

Critical examination of democratic principles of education, especially as it pertains to equity and social justice. Addresses the fundamental question of "Who gets access to the fundamental right of education and how?" Application of theories and concepts to the role of district leaders in implementing socially just educational settings.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: EOL 548 or consent of instructor.

	43178	Lecture-Discussion	A	5:30PM -9:20PM	T	323 Education Building	Rice, P	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/21/20-05/06/20 Section Info: The purpose of this course is to critically examine democratic principles of education, by asking the question, “Who gets access to the fundamental right of education and how?” Students will also reflect on their role as school leaders in building socially just educational settings (Shields, 2004). The course will cover the following broad topics from a P-20 perspective: what is democracy; the politics of power and identity; critical pedagogy & participation in the democratic process: parents, youth, & community; and transformative school leadership for social justice. Some assignments include facilitating a class discussion/activity related to the assigned readings; participating in an interactive book group throughout the semester; and finally students will write a paper using a critical/transformative framework to develop an action plan for leaders to address a specific social justice issue in an educational setting (higher education, k-12, community/neighborhood, organization).
