SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 OR 4 hours.

Advanced topics course in Creative Writing. Students study selected topic through a workshop model, pursuing advanced development in one or more approaches to writing in a specialized field or genre.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated, if topics vary. Prerequisite: Junior standing required.

Who knew research could be so fun? Where does inspiration come from? Where can we turn to find material for our writing? How can sources outside the self end up informing the self? In order to begin answering these questions, this course will focus on the purposeful search for exterior inspiration through field trips, presentations from guest artists, and other creative research strategies. We will look at how poets and essayists incorporate historical and personal narratives, letters, journals, art, and science into their writing. While examining and adopting an outward-looking creative process, we will explore the ways in which different avenues of source material generate and inform the creative process both through assigned readings and through your own creative writing. This writing will be workshopped and revised for inclusion in a final portfolio. Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
