Section Info:
This study abroad trip will occur in January. This course is restricted to students in the Illinois Social Innovation Global Scholars Program. Students develop global perspective through cultural immersion, explore the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, gain inspiration from social innovators tackling social and environmental problems, and build teamwork and change-making skills as they develop and execute social innovation projects. The winter intersession study abroad program will introduce students to social innovation and entrepreneurship in the cultural context of Israel, the "Start-Up Nation." Interactive engagements will expose students to diverse models and approaches to creating social innovation, including social entrepreneurship and enterprise development, social business, impact investing, microfinance, micro-enterprise development, and grassroots change-making. Students ideate solutions related to the Global Goals and create a proposal of work in consultation with the instructor to develop a social innovation project or social enterprise during the spring semester. Illinois Social Innovation Global Scholars meet together as a community of practice and gain exclusive access to resources, funding, critical feedback, professional mentorship, and peer support. Enrollment in the course does not include study abroad travel costs, which must be paid separately. Open to all majors and levels (with application selection process).

Technology and Disruption

This course meets with ACCY 199. With the explosive growth of new technologies, seemingly every profession is facing potential disruption. In fact, some claim that artificial intelligence alone will displace millions of jobs; while others claim that this same technology will also create even more jobs. In this course we examine different technologies at a high-level and discuss how they may impact, positively and negatively, both society and business. Potential technologies that will be reviewed at a high-level include data analytics, machine learning, drones, chatbots, augmented and virtual reality, blockchain, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence.
