This seminar type course will particularly focus on key issues associated with climate and weather policy, but also with a slant on how much policies can influence urban sustainability. With projections suggesting that 70% of humanity will be living in cities by 2050, we need to pay special attention to the urban environment in relationship to such policies. As a result, some classes will focus on the issues associated with achieving a sustainable urban environment. The course will involve some lectures, including bringing in a number of expert outside speakers, extensive discussions and participation by the students by having each student participate in speaking before the class on select topics.

We will discuss the basic atmospheric heat budget, surface energy budget, atmospheric circulation and Arctic atmosphere - ocean - ice interaction. The course consists of instructor-led lectures as well as student-led discussions of peer-reviewed journal papers. Students will carry out data analysis in homework assignments to further their understanding via hands-on learning.
