Topic: Theories of Photography. This course introduces students to the political and cultural stakes of debates around the status of the photographic image in the 21st century. Focusing on writing about photography from the 1970s to today, topics explored include: documentary, witness/cell phone photography, surveillance imagery, (embedded) photojournalism, ecology, biometrics, durational aesthetics, the relationship between photography and cinema, and the relationship between photography and political rights.
