Topic: Null Subjects In this seminar, we will look into the syntactic phenomenon of what can broadly be called null subjects, a property whereby subjects of a sentence need not be pronounced. Recent research identifies subclasses of null subject languages which show a different set of properties, one of which is the so-called consistent null subject languages, Spanish, Italian and European Portuguese being representative. A second subclass is sometimes called radical pro-drop languages, Korean and Japanese being representative. A third is often referred to as partial null subject languages, which include Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish and Marathi. We will approach these classes theoretically and see how the syntactic generative approach to universals and parametric variation has changed from the Principle and Parameters era (Chomsky 1981) to the more modern generative approach under Minimalism (Chomsky 1995 et seq.).
