Reacting to the Past

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

An introduction to history through participation in role-playing games set in the past. Topics will vary each time the course is taught. Students will take on the roles of historical figures (famous or obscure) engaged in difficult and complicated situations, and will be obliged to adhere to the beliefs and circumstances of those figures while attempting to pursue a course of action that will help them win the game -- and possibly alter the course of history.

Section Info: Topic: Riots, Revolutions, and Revolts Description: This course will explore conflict and division in American History through the Reacting to the Past program, in which students enact roles as historical figures in weeks-long games designed to immerse students in historical moments. This course will be focusing on three pivotal moments in the 20th century: the American Revolution, and the struggle between patriots and loyalists in Patriots, Loyalists, and Revolution in New York City; the beginning of the modern era, complete with bohemian lifestyles, women’s rights, and urbanization in Greenwich Village 1913: Suffrage, Labor, and the New Woman, and the convergence of a fractured political party, mainstream and underground journalists, and radical protestors at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, 1968. During all three periods, issues of changing gender and social roles, immigration, and political ideologies clash against each other as individuals and groups attempt to remake a broken society.
