This course will introduce students to topics concerning how Chinese women were and are presented, represented, and self-presented through history, literature, and media. Major themes will include (but not limited to): Gender relationship and women’s gender roles in China since Qing dynasty; Representations of Chinese women and their self-presentations; Women’s Fashion and Body; Gender and Medicine; Gender and Law; Gender and Technology; Gender and Labor; and Gender and Ethnicity. This course will consist of discussions, presentations, and practice projects.

This seminar guides students to read modern Chinese literature through applying different literary theories and critical ideas to understanding the text, the context, and the historical conditions. In this seminar, various literary and critical theories, ranging from new criticism and structuralism to new historicism and post-colonialism, are introduced. We will also read literary texts, rendered as a platform where literary theories and criticism are tested and understood. Primary texts in Chinese, and secondary literature in both English and Chinese.

Cultural Hist Ming Qing China
Section Info:
Topic: Communications, Formation of Publics and Law in Ming-Qing China. This course introduces students to recent scholarly works on the approaches, methodologies, and major issues in the study of the history of public formation in the Ming (1368) and Qing (1644-1911) periods. We will focus on the intersecting histories of communications, information regime, and law in the construction of publics. Works are selected from various disciplines and fields of study, covering a wide range of issues critical to our understanding of the role of print media, information regime, auto-organizations, and law in the formation of publics in Ming-Qing China. Participation in discussion is required and students are responsible for presentations. There will be written assignments and a final paper.
