Architecture as a Second Language

The conceptual toolbox used by architects, and the tools in it, are unique and used by architects in both expected and unexpected situations. These tools can be thought of as a second language. Architecture as a Second Language is a hands-on, experiential online course that immerses students in challenging activities similar to those architects face. The course helps develop new perspectives, capabilities, and insights that can be applied to any calling or discipline.

Credit: 3 hours Section Info: In this course you’ll learn how to master design thinking techniques in a variety of situations, and how to apply a multitude of design approaches to your own disciplinary area. While buildings are important, the thinking that led to them is what is critically important to understand if students want to have a perceptive, positive and profound impact on the world around them, no matter their career plans. What does it mean to think like an architect? Unique to the architect is the combination of thinking tools they have at their disposal – in their thinking toolbox – that they have access to at any time, place or situation. The 64 thinking tools you will learn in this course can be thought of as a second language. ARCH 164: Architecture as a Second Language will help develop new perspectives, capabilities, insights and superpowers that can be applied to any field, calling or area of study.
