Students will learn about theoretical foundations of equity, laws and policies governing equity and environmental justice, historical cases, assessment metrics, and the role of public planners and advocates in planning for an equitable transportation system. The course will draw from both academic and practice-oriented examples. Emphasis will be on the United States experience, but the course will include some international content.
45243	Lecture	LB	10:30AM -11:50AM	MW	102A Architecture Building	Braun, L	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/14/19-05/01/19 Credit: 4 hours Section Title: Public Transportation Planning Section Info: This course will explore key issues and analytical skills that are central to planning for public transportation systems (e.g., bus, rail) in cities and regions. Students will learn about the benefits and challenges of providing public transportation services; planning fundamentals (e.g., history, policy, governance, finance); connections between transportation and land use, including transit oriented development strategies; types and uses of data for system planning and design; service planning methods (e.g., demand analysis, capacity analysis, network and route design); and emerging technologies and trends in service provision. Issues of sustainability, livability, and social justice will be emphasized. Course activities will include hands-on projects designed around skills and core competencies that practitioners have identified as critical for new transportation planners.

Students will learn about different tools and strategies that bring people together, particularly in low-income neighborhoods and culturally diverse metropolitan regions. Collectively, we will design a participatory process for a community organization. The case study that will provide the focus of the seminar will be the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line Extension project planned for the underserved community areas of Chicago’s far South Side. Throughout the semester, we will grapple with the myriad of challenges and dilemmas faced by nonprofit advocates, community activists and equity-oriented public planners.
