Topic: Sexuality in Modern Europe Description: What is sexuality? How is it practiced, policed, represented, liberated and controlled? Focusing on modern Europe, we will explore the modern histories of sex and sexuality with a focus on how they have bee constituted as subjects of scientific knowledge and practice. Key thematic areas for discussion will include the medical invention of sex difference; the rise of sexology and the scientific study of homosexuality; prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases, and feminist health politics; the gendered politics of psychiatric diagnosis; eugenics, race, and sex; contraceptives and reproductive technologies; sex education; gender reassignment practices; the AIDS crisis; and family planning strategies in "third world" aid programs.
