Co-taught by a historian (Tariq Ali) and geographer (Brian Jefferson), the course examines the temporal and spatial dimensions of capital. Readings will consist of excerpts from Marx's Capital and other texts, classical works of Marxist theory and more recent scholarship on histories of global capitalism. The course thus places the recent scholarship on histories of capitalism within deeper traditions of Marxist theory. The course's fundamental goal is to search for theoretically and analytically rigorous understanding of how historians and geographers can examine capital and capitalism both temporally and spatially. We will examine how capital delineates space? How it shapes our experience of time? How capital and capitalism itself changes as we move between spaces and across time? This course introduces students to innovative advances in GIScience and geographic methods that can be applied in a wide range of research areas in geography, environmental health, urban studies and planning, transportation studies, and other fields. Topics include the spatial and temporal complexities of environmental influences, representing and measuring individual exposures to environmental influences, the uncertain geographic context problem (UGCoP), the neighborhood effect averaging problem (NEAP), selective mobility bias, and addressing contextual uncertainties through using dynamic analytical frameworks and high-resolution space-time data (e.g., GPS tracking data).
