Section Info:
This course explores some of our collective fears as a nation—and we have many of them—as projected in such figures as vampires, ghosts, monsters, mass murderers, animals, extraterrestrial creatures, and deceptively pleasant neighbors. Our survey commences during World War II—a time replete with all sorts of phantoms and also well-made horror films—and ends with the anxiety-filled beginning years of the new millennium. Apart from historicizing and interpreting the objects of our fears, we will also try to gain an appreciation of film genres more broadly: their narrative tropes, stylistic conventions, variations and cycles, audiences, and especially their cultural work. Student performance will be evaluated through conventional measures (class participation, quizzes, tests, papers) as well as media production assignments. No trigger warnings will be given before mandatory film screenings, but due to the subject of the course, students should expect to view grisly, heart-pounding and possibly upsetting images, as well as some simulated sex and nudity.
