Section Title:
Measurement in Comm Research
Section Info:
The value of quantitative scholarship depends on the quality of the measures that investigators use to conduct their research. This course examines the theoretical reasoning and statistical principles that govern measurement. The course is designed to cultivate the conceptual and statistical skills necessary for operationalizing constructs. The first part of the class will focus on how to formulate a conceptual definition of a construct. Then, the class will examine measurement issues associated with both continuous variables and categorical variables. Specific topics include reliability, validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, physiological measures, content analysis, and coding and rating schemes. Assignments will require students to grapple with measurement issues relevant to their own scholarship. The course is open to graduate students interested in all domains of quantitative research. Familiarity with linear regression procedures is required.

Section Title:
Group Communication
Section Info:
The object of this seminar is to consider both theoretical and pragmatic issues in current research on small group communication. Group communication is an important constituent of organizational communication, interpersonal communication, health communication, and social influence. The course is designed to familiarize participants with key theories, problems, and issues in group communication research and how they relate to the larger field of group research. Topics covered include: group decision-making and deliberation; argument and influence in groups; teamwork, multi-team systems, and team effectiveness; group culture; dialectical views of groups; and groups in organizations and society. The course will also explore specialized methods for group communication research and diagnosis of groups. Finally, we will consider the implications of what we are learning for teaching group communication courses and for practitioners, preparing you to teach the basic group communication course.

Section Title:
Mass Media & the Individual
Section Info:
This course provides students with a broad introduction to theory and research on mass communication and the audience. The seminar’s two main goals are (1) to introduce you to some of the major theoretical approaches to research on the social psychological effects of mass media, and (2) to offer you a forum for developing and exercising basic skills in reading, understanding, and writing theoretical and empirical social scientific work. The seminar focuses primarily, though not exclusively, on communication and social psychological research conducted within a social scientific framework. You will encounter topics that have received a great deal of attention in the literature on mass communication uses and effects. Given time and practical constraints, however, only selected topics can be included. This course is intended to provide a solid foundation for you to build upon in your subsequent coursework and research trajectory.
