Section Info:
Topic: Advanced Drawing. Monsters. The freakish, horrible, deformed, mysterious, odd, atrocious, grotesque, mutant, bizarre, demonic, alien, anomalous, aberrant and monstrous, by turns terrifying, sympathetic, or even cute, populate our art, literature, film, and propaganda. They haunt our consciousness and telegraph our collective anxieties, with consequential psychological, social and political effects. Starting with an examination of a variety of monsters in visual culture and proceeding into an investigation of theories and discourses surrounding the cultural production of monsters, this studio/seminar hybrid will engage students in both critical inquiry and studio production on the topic of the monstrous. Building on basic drawing materials, methods and skills, students will experiment and refine personal, artistic expression in multiple drawing media while producing their own versions of the monstrous. Meets with ARTS 454, 1FLAGG 129.
