Section Info:
TOPIC: Data Visualization for Social Research Students will learn how to acquire, examine, and transform sociological data for analysis, and how to explore it through modern visualization tools and techniques. We will also examine ingenious historical examples of effective data visualization, and dive deeply into theories and design patterns (and anti-patterns) for presenting data and information. Students will get substantial hands-on practice with modern data visualization tools and methods, and will work to master compositional principles such as layering and separation, strategic use of whitespace and lighter graphical elements, color gradients and contrast, and the pattern of “small-multiples”, and will learn practical ways to enhance the effectiveness of visualizations through annotation and interactivity.
