Title: Cultural Conflicts Description: This course surveys selected cultural clashes that have deeply influenced the shape of U.S. society over the twentieth century. The major topics include but are not limited to: American imperialism and isolationism; drink and sex in the 1920s; the history of blackface; views of eugenics and birth control; the far right and hate crimes; the pornography wars; rise of gay marriage; populism and immigration, and more. Requirements include reading and discussion, presentations, book review, and research essay.
