Cross Burning? Flag Burning? Can you say the F-word? the N-Word? Can a judge or the government do anything about it? Can your boss fire or punish you for saying such things at work? (Even if you are an NFL player?) What about your teacher or principal or Dean at school? Does it matter if you do it online? What if you use a pseudonym? Often the answer to these questions — and many others — is “it depends.” This course separates the law from the B.S. and informs you in clear terms what you do AND DO NOT have a Constitutional right to say and do in America.

Section Info: Introduces students to the grammar, story structure and elements of documentary storytelling. The class will discuss different genres of documentaries as well as media formats. Students will also learn beginning documentary production techniques to create their own stories. There are no pre-requisites except an interest in journalism, film-making and/or storytelling.

Class will also include studio production jobs for Good Morning Illini’s live broadcast on Fridays. There are no pre-requisites for this course although students should not be taking it concurrently with JOUR 445. Meets with JOUR 480 (71504)
