Graduate Seminar in Ecology
Section Info:
1 hour. Graduate Seminar in Ecology. Topic: Planetary Health. Are you concerned that you are witnessing the sixth mass extinction in Earth's history? Do you suffer from climate change anxiety? Do you fear the insect apocalypse? Then good news: a graduate seminar exploring your worst fears will be offered in Fall 2019! Planetary health refers to the health of the human civilization and the state of the natural systems on which it depends. Arguably the greatest challenge facing humanity in the 21st century is to attain a sustainable level of use of the earth's resources, an endeavor that will require knowledge spanning many disciplines. In this seminar, we will read and discuss the scientific literature pertaining to the health of global systems. This research typically integrates a diversity of approaches and falls under the general purview of sustainability science, a new interdisciplinary framework for addressing the most pressing environmental challenges. Seminar participants will be expected to read articles weekly pertaining to complex analyses of global systems and participate in leading critical discussions on these topics. Toward the end of the semester, participants will have the opportunity to steer the seminar in one of several directions, including developing new instructional materials on the subject of planetary health or in designing a research study in this topic area that may continue beyond the fall semester.
