Description: This course examines gender historically—how it has been created, challenged, changed and, always, in terms of how gender intersects with categories and identities of class, race, ethnicity, religion, region, sexual preference, and disability. Topics and readings include, for example, enslaved women, motherhood; unionization efforts, domestic labor, sexual assault, Helen Keller, Ida B. Wells, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Phyllis Schlafly, Black Lives Matter, social movements organized by racial and/or religious and sexual identities for voting rights, reproductive rights, and equality. Through this course, students will better understand contemporary society within a historical context and how to situate themselves within that historical context. Expect interesting readings, films, writing and discussion.
