Section Info:
History 257/Global Studies 228 seeks to understand the nature and history of terrorist tactics and strategies from ancient times to the present. We will consider terrorism as practiced by states, militaries, social-ethnic communities, criminal organizations, and sub-state radical terrorist groups, with the primary emphasis on the last. What unites the examples we will study is not so much their causes or goals but their practices. Terrorists hope to manipulate us through the fear they instill and the outrage they incite. We will consider radical terrorism as a form of psychological warfare that requires so little manpower and so few resources that it can be easily and quickly adopted by radical extremists. We will study this clear and present danger in a transnational context, detailing and interrelating examples from North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia. In addition to the text book and some academic articles, students will read selected articles from current issues of The New York Times, in order to apply what is being learned in class to current events.
