Section Title:
Landmark Papers in Astrophysic
Section Info:
ASTR 596 is a seminar course on student presentations of selected landmark papers (both theoretical and observational) covering a broad range of astrophysical research area. During each class a student will present a talk on the selected paper, with a proper background introduction of the topic covered. The student will meet with the instructor and/or other experts on the particular topic prior to the presentation and go over the materials to be presented. After the presentation, the instructor and other students will give feedback to the speaker. The rationales for this course are two-fold. First, the readings and hearing about landmark, i.e., the most important and foundational, papers in different fields will broaden the scientific vision of the students. Second, the formal training in reading literature, preparing talk materials, and delivering the talk will improve the overall presentation skills of the students. The requirements of this course are more intensive than the current student journal club. At the beginning of the semester, the instructor will provide a list of classic papers to choose from. The first lecture will be introduction. All graduate students are encouraged to enroll in this seminar course and present a well-prepared professional talk on a topic, focusing on the classic paper chosen. Senior undergraduate students are welcome to participate but the level of these papers are usually quite advanced. S/U Grading.
