AFRO 498 African Diasporas in Brazil: History, Anthropology and Archaeology. It is estimated that about 40% of the Africans sent to the Americas during the age of the Atlantic slave trade had Brazil as their final destination. For this reason, Brazil has the largest African-descent population outside of the African continent and consequently, a central importance for the study of the African diaspora. This course will approach the origins and transformations of African cultures in Brazil through historiographic, anthropological and archaeological studies.
