Topic: From the Mongols to the Modern World. Description: The course traces the gradual integration of various regions of the world into an interconnected system from the thirteenth century to the present. It focuses on four long-term developments that have most powerfully shaped the world in which we live: cultural encounter and the formation and evolution of concepts of 'selfhood' and 'otherness;' the development of global networks of trade, peoples, goods, and diseases; struggles between Europeans and colonized peoples; and global conflicts between state powers.
