Section Title:
Writing in Graduate School
Section Info:
Communication researchers write, but tend not to think of themselves as writers. Graduate students train as researchers, but their training seldom involves systematic attention to writing. This course invites students to explore what it means to think of themselves as writers. We will identify and learn from models of scholarly writing in different areas of the field; explore and try out writing practices that foster creativity and productivity; and dissect key genres of scholarly writing (e.g., the journal article). Students will complete a number of short assignments across the term, and a final assignment will ask them to apply what they have learned to an ongoing research project of their own. The course will give students valuable tools for developing as a writer in graduate school and beyond. This seminar is designed for all graduate students in the Department of Communication, regardless of area, and is especially appropriate for early-career students still in coursework.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
