Topic: Global Middle East This course is about the contemporary Middle East in a changing global context. It offers an overview of the region from an interdisciplinary (socio-economic, political, and cultural) and global perspective. Focusing on the Muslim Middle East, the course is organized around the central question of how the on-going social, economic, cultural, and religious changes in the past two decades have come to shape the region’s current reality. We will explore the extent to which the current developments in the Middle East are the outcome of intense interactions of the region with the global forces and happenings. The course covers wide-ranging topics including the social structure, family dynamics, urban life, gender relations, films, youth culture, Islam, political regimes, sectarianization, terrorism, and social movements. We will conclude by a discussion of the Arab revolutions.
