This course examines the impact that media have had on the ways that sport business is organized, managed, and marketed. Particular attention is given to the effect that negotiated television rights have on the evolving nature of the sport entertainment business, including competitive balance and franchise value. Implications of the evolving media landscape for the future of sport marketing are explored.

Olympic Traning Center Oper.
Section Info:
This course examines the processes and challenges when managing and marketing a training center for world class athletes. Students will meet with leaders from key departments at the United States Olympic Training Center (USOTC), and will formulate an analysis of a particular issue faced by the Olympic Training Center. At the end of the course, they will present their analysis and recommendations to Olympic Training Center administrators. Monday through Friday of spring break (March 19-23, 2018). $750 + airfare. Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs. Students will live in the same dormitories as the athletes, and will eat with athletes and coaches at the USOTC. The cost includes accommodation, food, transportation, and instruction from USOTC administrators. Incidentals (e.g., optional off-site excursions, souvenirs, etc.) are not included.

Section Info:
Sport and Sustainability (Orange, Blue, and Green Team) Professional, Olympic and intercollegiate sport has embraced increasingly influential positions supporting sustainability and environmental protection. Using a multi-disciplinary perspective, course will encourage the development of personal perspectives on controversial topics, provide opportunities to examine the linkages found in nature and connecting economic systems, the environment, and the sport industry. Students will be exposed to sustainability models being embraced by leagues, teams, and events to increase revenues and reduce costs and analyze strategies managers implement to raise community awareness of social issues. Sport Systems in the US & Euro
Section Info:
This course will analyze the managerial aspects of sport and athlete development in North America and Europe. The course will first focus on understanding the sport systems of the United States, Canada, and two European countries. The second portion of the course will examine the three core managerial functions of a sport system: recruitment into sport, retention of athletes over the lifespan, and facilitating athlete transitions within and across sport systems. In the final segment, students will consider ways to incorporate aspects of other sport systems in ways that are appropriate to the home culture.
