Credit: 3 hours.

Interactions of biotic and abiotic components of forests as they relate to the health, structure and function of these ecosystems. The course is ecophysiological and organismic in approach, but includes biochemical concepts central to the understanding of forest biology. Lecture-discussion combined with assigned readings, field projects, and a paper. One Saturday field trip required.

Online scheduled class sessions require each student to have high speed internet access and either a headset with microphone or an external microphone and speakers so they may participate in the class discussions. Wireless internet is not recommended. This comprehensive course covers key concepts of the anatomical structure of trees together with associated mycorrhizal fungi and other root symbionts, the physiological functions of trees and their components, the evolution of trees and forests through geological time, forest tree genetics, general forest ecology and some specific ecological relationships of forest trees. A paper based on an approved, student-selected project will be required. 3 credits. Biiweekly short essay question sets on lecture material (40 percent) and two exams-multiple choice/true false) (40 percent), together with the individual project report (20 percent) will be the basis for grades. Extra credit option available (up to 10 percent). Materials: Students should obtain an illustrated, comprehensive guide to trees of North America from a library or book store (i.e. The Peterson Field Guide) Readings online and as attachments to class emails provided as needed.
