HDFS 379/AFRO 398: Study Abroad Experience Section Title: Identity Development Research Workshop Ghana Research Experience in Ghana, West Africa. This course focuses on ethnic identity development in the family context with an emphasis on Africans and people of African descent. We will examine why and how learning about identity, family, and community in historical and contemporary Ghana can provide insight into identity development for African Americans in the U.S. The 8-week course (second half of semester) will consist of lectures, in-class discussion and exercises to familiarize students with Ghanaian history and culture, family and identity theories, and qualitative research methods. The 3-week experience in Ghana will consist of guided fieldwork, direct community engagement and visiting historical sites related to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. We will spend time in Northern and Southern Ghana in the cities of Paga, Bolgatanga, Tamale, Kumasi, Elmina and Cape Coast.
