Writing and Research

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 4 hours.

Introduction in research-based writing and the construction of academic, argumentative essays that use primary and secondary sources as evidence. This course fulfills the Campus Composition I general education requirement.

Credit is not given for both RHET 105 and any of these other Comp I courses: RHET 101, RHET 102, CMN 111 or CMN 112.

Students whose second language is English should take an English placement test through the Division of English as an International Language, before signing up for rhetoric. Engineering students must obtain a dean's approval to drop this course after the second week of instruction.

Like other modes of creativity—painting, music, dance, creative writing, etc.—academic writing is a process and this is a process-oriented class. That is, this class is designed to give you skills for writing critically while establishing a writing practice that will enable you to succeed in your other courses during your studies here at UIUC. Together, we will address the challenges of writing, such as thinking through conceptual problems, getting past writer’s block, and formulating “burning questions” that drive research, in addition to learning the moves that matter when writing ourselves into the academic conversation. We’ll use a number of strategies, both analog and digital, such as free writing, cartooning and drawing, journaling, small group discussions, and peer-review. Moreover, because Unit One at Allen Hall celebrates diversity of gender by providing gender inclusive housing, this class will explore rhetoric, research and writing through the lens of gender. Gender is a part of our daily lives, and informs nearly every other aspect of the world around us, including: politics, race, sustainability, sports, popular culture, advertising, education, technology, labor, and economics, to name only a few. While this course is first and foremost a writing course, we will explore how rhetoric creates meaning for and around gender, as well as how our own research and writing practices are informed by the various genders we inhabit. Each major assignment in our course will allow you the flexibility to select topics you’re interested in while asking you to approach your research through gender as a category of analysis. In addition to a traditional research paper and other writing assignments, students will have an opportunity to use their research to create work in a genre of their own interest including zines, comics, podcasts, and music.
