From High School Musical to Black Panther: Disney’s Global Media This course introduces students to one of the largest global media conglomerates today: The Disney Company. It's designed for students who want to explore media and cinema studies through a fun topic with which they are likely to have a degree of familiarity. Using weekly in-class screenings, discussion, readings, ad writing, students will examine a wide variety of Disney media, looking at global representation, production, and audiences. We will begin with Black Panther and also screen Moana, Mulan, High School Musical, and other Marvel/Disney productions.

The entertainment industry is a multi-billion dollar global enterprise, and yet the way it works is often shrouded in mystery. This course is designed to give students an introduction to the various aspects of the entertainment industry, focusing specifically on film and television. Addressing how multi-media corporations structure the “business of entertainment,” this course will look at media production, business, management, financing, marketing, globalization, and labor practices to a construct a greater understanding of the industrial production of contemporary culture.

Students will participate in the production process from the very beginning: script, preproduction, shooting and editing. This course will give you a substantial approach to the basic components, strategies, methodology, vocabulary and technics used to create commercials, short films and all sort of broadcasting images in a professional way using your own smartphone. Classwork will include viewing and discussion as well as production from initial script through shooting and editing. Students will learn through practical exercises and will produce their own audiovisual projects.
