Topic: Cicero under Caesar - In a letter to Atticus from late May 44 BCE, Cicero, speaking of Caesar, assassinated two months prior, confesses, “I was so much in his good graces (may the gods confound him, dead as he is!) that at my time of life, since the killing of our master has not set us free, he was not a master to run away from.” The complexity of the sentiment is striking. The two men had been close, if not exactly friends. Over there previous year, they had dedicated works to one another, dined together, corresponded, and discussed literature. Politically they had not see eye to eye, and had even penned competing pamphlets in a propaganda war over the memory of the republic, but they were hardly enemies. Nevertheless, Cicero could hardly contain his glee, at least initially, on hearing news of Caesar’s assassination. This seminar will focus on the complex relationship of these two men as a lens through which to view the fraught politics and culture of late-republican Rome. Particular emphasis will be given to the speeches, letters, and philosophical works written during Caesar’s dictatorship and in the immediate aftermath of his assassination. Instructor: Brian Walters
