Section Info:
ENGL 210 is designed to introduce you to the principal writers and periods of British literature from 1800 to the present day. This course will help you develop a sense of the important contrasts between the primary periods of British literature from about 1800 on: Romantic (1785-1830), Victorian (1830-1901), and the twentieth century. We will also explore various literary movements, such as early Romanticism, realism, aestheticism, modernism, and postcolonialism. We will consider ways in which specific literary forms and genres reflect as well as produce or alter cultural perceptions within a specific period. In the process, we will think about how ideas of Britain and Britishness evolved alongside the literature, as well as what it means to study literature through a historical lens.
