Topic: Contemporary African Art. This seminar examines recent scholarship on modern and contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora. Topics will include artistic responses to political upheavals and liberation struggles from the 1960s to the present; contemporary artists’ engagements with history; and the role of exhibitions, institutions, and markets on both local and global levels. We will consider the tensions inherent in defining a field of contemporary art based on artists’ geographical origins. And we will also consider the predicament of African and diasporic artists in relation to issues of marginalization and alterity within the global art world.
