Brief Motivational Interventions for Substance Use

Credit: 4 hours.

This course prepares social workers to deliver brief interventions that build motivation for change among individuals that use substances. Students participate in hands-on skill development activities for two empirically supported treatments, Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and Motivational Interviewing. Students are expected to reach beginning competency in delivering these two clinical models.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: SOCW 400. MSW: Social Work - UIUC.

Face to face dates/times will be: June 24th, July 8 & 9, and July 29th from 9-4 in room 2018. Live online session will be held Monday, June 12th at 6pm. **This course contains training activities that are funded, in part, by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA Grant # TI 26046 awarded to Associate Professor, Doug Smith). This section will be randomized to one of two teaching conditions to allow us to test whether one teaching method is better than the other at improving students’ skills to use an evidence-based treatment model called Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Upon registration and also during the first week of class, the study will be explained to you and you will have an opportunity to consent to whether or not you want your data used in a research study. Eventually, you will also be allowed access to all teaching modules if you do not initially receive them during the study period. Because content in these classes is funded in part by SAMHSA, we will ask all students to complete training satisfaction surveys whether or not they decide to participate in the study.
