Intensive study of a period or school of instrumental composition, or of a particular genre of instrumental music. Includes wide reading in the social and intellectual climate of the period concerned; structural and stylistic analysis; and work with primary sources, whenever available.

May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528A (consult Class Schedule for specific section information), or graduate standing in musicology, or consent of instructor.

Virtuoso Piano Lit 1700-2000
Section Info:
Topics in History of Instrumental Music (Virtuoso Piano Literature, 1700-2000) This course will examine a range of virtuosic piano works beginning in 1741 with Bach’s Goldberg Variations and ending in 1998 with John Zorn’s Carny. In between, works that made particularly rigorous demands on the performer will be examined to discover the expressive and aesthetic techniques used in their composition. Other composers covered may include Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Chopin, Ravel, Carter, Messiaen, Sorabji, Xenakis, and Ferneyhough.
