Section Info:
"Illinois Bach Academy." Note: This course will meet June 18-23 only. The course offering is 1-3 variable credit hours. The workshop will begin at 6:00 PM on June 18 and conclude after the evening concert on June 23. Spend a week studying, rehearsing, and performing one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest masterpieces - the St John Passion, with some of America's leading experts in Baroque music. Musicologist Robin Leaver, violinist Nancy Wilson, and conductor Andrew Megill lead the faculty. A typical day might begin with a lecture on the liturgical traditions in the Leipzig churches where Bach presented the first performances of the St. John Passion, choral rehearsals on the John Passion, and a master class on Baroque performance practice. The week will end with a public performance of the St John Passion with a period instrument orchestra. Other faculty include Baroque violinist Leah Nelson and Fuma Sacra, a professional vocal ensemble whose performances of Baroque and Renaissance music have "left the audience gasping in amazement." Some experience as a choral singer is necessary, however, the week is designed for amateur as well as professional singers. For more information, visit https://publish.illinois.edu/bachacademy/.
