Examines films as a significant medium of commentary on society and history. Explores the motives and careers of moviemakers, the ways in which films are influenced by their audiences, and how audiences' perception of historical processes are affected by films. Topics will vary.

Same as MACS 300. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary. Students may register in more than one section per term. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours.

Topic: Film and the Cold War Description: We will focus on U.S. popular films produced during the Cold War to gain insight into circulating cultural understandings of the time period. Together, we will explore questions such as how these films characterized the United States and the world, how these films produced and reproduced conceptions of race and gender, and how these films were related to United States foreign policy. Course readings, lectures, and discussions will be focused on developing an understanding of the international dimensions of the Cold War and the place of cultural productions, such as film, in history and historical narration.
