We will look together at the theories of four major postwar (after World War II) “schools” of media theory—the Frankfurt School, the Toronto School, Cybernetics, and U.S.-based Mass Communications research—and then consider their present-day legacies in critical/cultural communication studies, affordance and mediatization theories, network theories, and recent attempts to incorporate new media into media effects research. Students are expected to be active participants. Coursework will include an in-class presentation, an annotated bibliography, and a short paper describing the “state of the art” in a chosen area of media studies and/or media theory. Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
