Advanced seminar in international relations, providing graduate students with original research experience. Students design and execute a research program, resulting in a major paper suitable for conference presentation and/or publication. The seminar will rotate among specific research topics in the area of international conflict, international law and organization, and international political economy respectively.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 12 hours. Prerequisite: PS 580.

TOPIC: Peace Science and Militarized Interstate Disputes An advanced seminar on why militarized interstate disputes go to war. Emphasis is placed on investigating the role of territorial disputes, alliances, rivalry, and arms races as factors increasing the probability of war. Students will complete a major data analysis paper using the MID data set. Meets in 404 DKH.
