Advanced study of cultural, social, historical, economic, and/or political issues in media and/or cinema; topics vary but may include national and transnational cinemas, directors, genres, historical movements, social and political movements, thematic studies, television, convergence culture, new media.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated in the same or separate terms to a maximum of 6 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours as topics vary. Prerequisite: One College of Media course or consent of instructor.

Section Info:
100 Years of Rotten Tomatoes: a History of Film Criticism. 100 Years of Rotten Tomatoes is a course that will examine the long history of movie criticism in the US and abroad. We will read reviews and critical essays by movie critics such as Vachel Lindsay, Parker Tyler, Manny Farber, Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, and Manohla Dargis and their contexts in the US, as well as the UK critics and French movements including the Impressionist critics of the 20s, the Cahiers du Cinéma of the 50s and Film Journal critics of the 70s. All readings will be in English. We will also screen films relevant to each week’s critic or critical group.
