Topic Title: "Null subjects in Romance" The main focus of this seminar is on null subjects. There will be three sections to the course: 1. A typology of null subject languages: consistent null subject languages, partial null subject languages and non-null subject languages. What are the set of properties that define each class? How can we account for this synchronic variation? 2. A diachronic perspective of null subjects: It has been observed that languages go through stages from consistent null subject, to partial null subject to non-null subject languages. How can we account for this diachronic change? Does it parallel the synchronic variation? 3. The effect of null subjects on grammar: It has been claimed that being a null subject language has effects on other parts of the grammar. We will see claims in the literature regarding word order, parasitic gap licensing, as well as se-constructions, among others. Practical issues: This will be a seminar, and it will be run like a seminar. This means that participants will be expected to do the readings and come prepared to discuss them. Requirements: Readings, Participation, a presentation of some article related to null subjects & a short (8-12 double spaced) paper that relates to null subjects
