This 16-week course is designed for students to enter at any level of practice. Here students will be responsible for developing a project, its deadlines, and required research. Students will be able to work in any medium. However, students will need to already know how to use their desired computer programs or mediums. This will be a seminar in which we will watch documentaries and conclude with discussion. There will be illustration books assigned that will help you understand storytelling and practice. Students are expected to be self-motivated as there will be no hand-holding. But weekly critique will help students stay on task. Craven, E	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/17/17-05/03/17 Credit: 3 hours Section Title: Mining the University Section Info: Topic: Mining the University is a hybrid course (online and on-campus) allowing students to assemble their own intellectual experience by finding and attending interesting on-campus public events outside of their majors. Students are charged to find challenging events each week (lectures, performances, screenings, discussions of intellectual value), contribute these ‘finds to a class calendar full of possibilities, attend one of those events (not necessarily the same they contributed) and then post a written evaluation of their chosen event each week to the class blog. Each student creates a collection of 15 different intellectual experiences with observations and responses shared with all class members as well as a final class post to summarize the evolution of the collection. Through the study, exposure, and immersion into Japanese aesthetics and culture, it is hoped that students will acquire a better understanding of how the idea of beauty permeates through many aspects of Japanese culture and how these ideals may be applied to their own work, interactions, and understanding of their own surroundings. Students will be exposed to Chado (the Japanese Way of Tea); Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement); shodo (Japanese calligraphy) and Japanese cooking. Guest instructors will include Professor Kimiko Gunji and Professor Shozo Sato. Open to campus, no restrictions.
