Theory in African American Studies: From the Black Progressive Movement to #BlackLivesMatter The affirmation of Black life in the face of racism, exploitation, violence, and erasure has been a central feature of African-American reality. AFRO 490 is an upper division course that explores the theories, ideologies, and frameworks that have been employed to assert, study, and understand Black freedom between the Black Progressive Movement (1890-1915) and the Movement for Black Lives (2013-Present). The course is structured around interrogations of Africana strategies and struggles for liberation, justice, recognition, and self-determination—all of which are increasingly relevant in our current era of white backlash. Paying particular attention to the sociohistorical and discursive context, we will engage classic and contemporary texts that provide insight into the historical struggle to make Black lives matter. The course will cover theories and ideologies including Black Nationalism, Black Radicalism, Pan-Africanism, Black Feminism, and Afro-Pessimism; and will center on the work of intellectuals and activists such as W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Frantz Fanon, Claudia Jones, C.L.R. James, Malcolm X, Angela Y. Davis, Patricia Hill Collins, and Molefi Asante.
