Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

Avian Field Research
Section Info:
This is a practical course on field research, whose primary purpose is to provide firsthand experience in conducting all aspects of a science project outside of controlled laboratory settings. The course will focus on birds, with the secondary purpose of exposing students to a variety of common field techniques and giving in depth training in banding and radio telemetry. These are marketable job skills that are often required or preferred in today's wildlife job market. This class will meet at the Anita Purves Nature Center, (1505 N. Broadway in Urbana). Section Title:
Fish Behavior and Physiology
Section Info:
The objective of this course is to familiarize students with commonly studied behavioral and physiological characteristics of fish, and to provide hands-on experience inhow these characteristics are assessed by biologists. Students will be required to collect data, communicate their findings with classmates and compile data, conduct statistical analysis, and process their findings to answer key questions from laboratory activities. Instruction for this course will take place in the classroom, laboratory, and at the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Aquatic Research Facility just south of the UIUC campus. Students will be required to arrange for transport to the facility, however if any students are unable to secure this,arrangements can be made with the instructor. There is no fee for the FBP section of NRES 285 in Fall 2017. Upland Habitat Technique
Section Info:
Topic: Upland Habitat Techniques. Through a variety of field experiences, students will learn the basics of how to measure, evaluate, and answer questions regarding the relationship between wildlife and habitat. Classes will take place in a different habitat each week and students will learn techniques that help biologists assess the biotic and abiotic conditions that support animal populations. This course has a $80 field trip fee.
