Jazz Aural Skills I is the first of two courses designed to equip students for the rigorous demands of a professional jazz musician. The course is designed to strengthen the student's ability to recognize chord progressions, scales, chord alterations, and common forms in order to react and integrate them into solo improvisation and group playing. Students learn how to strengthen their own relative pitch recognition through singing/and or playing their instrument(s), including piano.

2 undergraduate hours. 2 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MUS 107, 108, 172 and 173, or by consent of instructor. This course is open to jazz majors, music majors, and interested students.
