ARTH 535: This seminar will focus on the role of the visual arts in relation to the emergent practice of "natural knowledge" (the study of nature) in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Topics will include: theories of visual and material knowledge in this period; the diverse functions of "cabinets of curiosity" comprised of art objects, natural specimens, and exotica; the role of social and commercial networks in producing a culture of observational natural inquiry. We will also track how considering images in relation to early modern science has produced new methods of interpretation and notions of how visual arts produce signification. The seminar will be concurrent with an exhibition at the Krannert Art Museum, "Coveting Nature: Art, Collecting, and Natural History in Early Modern Europe."
